Fleet Servicing Guide
If you want to run an efficient fleet and get the most from your vehicles then it will be vital to ensure they are in the best possible condition: and this will mean arranging for regular fleet servicing.
There a host of fleet service companies available: so how do you know which one to use and which one will offer you the best deal?
Fleet servicing: the options.
There are several options when it comes to fleet services, including:
- Choosing an independent garage: You could choose to send your fleet to an independent garage, just as most private customers would opt for a local garage for their service and MOT needs.
- Dealerships: If you buy or lease a fleet of vehicles from one car manufacturer then fleet servicing may be included as part of the package. This can mean that you benefit from “free” fleet servicing: and you should ensure that you keep up with the maintenance schedule.
- Fleet management: If you use a fleet management company then it may arrange fleet servicing and repairs as part of its package. This can take away the hassle of arranging fleet servicing away from you: but you should always ensure you are happy with the service provider it chooses.
What is included in a fleet service?
Fleet servicing will usually be offered on a variety of levels because while fleet services are beneficial they are not essential like passing an MOT. As such you can tailor a service to meet your needs.
Some of the elements that are usually included in a fleet service are:
- Oil and replacement oil filters: Should be included in all services, even those that come in between your regular services.
- Fluid level checks and top-ups: Among the fluids checked should be: anti-freeze coolant; the vehicle’s brake fluid; windscreen wash; as well as the fluid for power steering.
- Essential checks: These will typically incorporate the vehicle’s: exhaust condition; lights; windscreen wipers; battery condition; tyre tread depth and pressures; charging system; suspension checks; steering checks; and a full brakes check. There may be some essential checks that are only carried out as part of a 12month service, such as: wheel alignment, wheel balance and wheel bearing checks; auxiliary drive belt check; and brake fluid condition.
- Replacements: Fleet services should also include the replacement of the following parts: fuel filters for diesel cars and vans; spark plugs for petrol cars and vans; and the air filter.
- Additional services: Some fleet servicing providers may offer additional services: such as a car wash and valet; or collection and delivery of your vehicle.
- Warranties: Many fleet service companies will provide warranties on their parts and labour – usually for around 12months. This means that should any problems occur you have the peace of mind that these parts can be replaced at no additional cost.
How regularly should you carry out fleet servicing?
Most vehicles will outline how regularly they should be serviced in the manufacturer’s handbook: and if you are leasing vehicles with a maintenance package included then this should be clearly outlined for you.
As a general rule of thumb however, you should look to carry out a full service check at least once a year: or every 12,000miles. If you want to keep your vehicles in the best possible condition then you may wish to arrange for interim checks carried out every six months, or every 6,000miles.
Most fleet owners choose to have their annual services occur at the same time as putting the vehicle through its MOT test. This will reduce the “down time” for your vehicles while helping ensure they are roadworthy and legal.
