Fleet Tracking and Navigation Guide
If you want to run an efficient fleet then investing in the latest fleet tracking and fleet navigation technology (collectively known as ‘fleet telematics’) can be hugely beneficial. Here we look at how fleet tracking and navigation could help your business.
Fleet tracking and navigation explained
Fleet tracking and navigation will usually involve a “black box” being installed inside your vehicle. This is used to monitor the vehicle’s behaviour and relays information back to the fleet owner via tracking with GPS software. With fleet tracking software you should then be presented with information about the vehicle’s performance and driver behaviour.
In turn, this can aid with navigation. Just as satellite navigation systems rely on GPS technology to help you reach a destination as quickly as possible; fleet navigation can be used to locate vehicles and ensure they embark on the most efficient routes while also alerting them to any problems such as traffic congestion.
Why invest in fleet tracking and navigation?
There may be a number of benefits to fleet tracking and fleet navigation software:
- Fuel savings: It has been proven on numerous occasions that fleet tracking can lead to fuel savings because it can point to best practices and encourages drivers to be more efficient. This can also help to reduce your company’s environmental impact.
- Mileage and time management: By choosing the most efficient routes with navigation software you can limit a vehicle’s mileage and make more effective use of each driver’s time on the road. For example, you could send a vehicle to the nearest appropriate job and monitor the journeys that are taken to discover the most efficient routes.
- Security and safety: With vehicle tracking you may be able to boost the safety and security of your vehicles. Some tracking devices will alert fleet owners to inappropriate vehicle behaviour: for example, if the vehicle was stolen. They can also be fitted with personal safety devices including panic buttons. By encouraging best practices they should also help to limit inappropriate behaviour and driving techniques: therefore reducing the risk of accidents occurring. Among the behaviours that can be analysed are: harsh braking and acceleration; inappropriate cornering; and rapid acceleration.
- Insurance savings: Fleet tracking can be used to locate stolen vehicles and can therefore lead to insurance savings. In addition, many insurance providers are now using black box technology to learn more about driver behaviour and to reward motorists who drive more responsibly.
Will fleet tracking and navigation really lead to savings?
How effective fleet tracking software is in saving your business money will largely depend on how effectively you use it: however, there are many examples of these systems working effectively for fleets.
For example, according to statistics from the Energy Saving Trust, the NHS Trust Leeds Teaching Hospitals was able to knock 220,000 miles off its yearly mileage thanks to the use of a tracking device; while the Royal Mail was able to cut its fuel consumption by around 10 per cent: leading to savings of £4.4million. While your business may not be on this scale, the savings can still be substantial and quickly pay for the costs of having the technology installed.
In addition, tracking and navigation can be used to resolve other disputes. For example, it could be beneficial in dealing with false insurance claims by proving the location of a vehicle at the time of an accident. It could also be used to recover stolen vehicles.
You could also use vehicle tracking to introduce staff incentives: rewarding those that are proven to drive most efficiently over a set period.
