Fleet Tyres Guide

The thought of buying tyres regularly for your fleet can seem like a hassle. They are hardly an exciting purchase: and they are often very expensive.

However, the fact is that it is hard to think of anything more important than good tyres. They are the only contact between the vehicle and the road and are therefore vital for vehicle safety; and they can make a huge difference to how efficiently your fleet is able to run too as worn tyres can drastically impact a vehicle’s fuel economy. So here we offer a fleet tyre buying guide so you can make the most of your purchase.

Which tyres should you buy for your fleet?

The handbook that accompanies the vehicles in your fleet should outline the tyre size and specification that you should be using.

Each tyre will also carry markings: and it can be helpful to understand what these markings mean to ensure you are getting the right tyres. The markings refer to the capabilities, composition, dimensions and size of the tyres and may be displayed like this: 175/65 R14 T. In this instance the markings can be broken down as follows:

175: This refers to the tyre’s width in millimetres.

65: A tyre sidewall profile: i.e. the height as a percentage of the width.

R: This means ‘radial’ rather than ‘cross ply’.

14: This is the wheel trim’s diameter, expressed in inches.

T: This is the tyre’s speed rating and it should not surpass the maximum speed of the vehicle.

Tyre speed ratings are as follows:

S: 112mph/180km/h.

T: 118mph/190km/h.

U: 125mph/200km/h.

H: 130mph/210km/h.

V: 149mph/240km/h.

W(ZR): 168mph/270km/h.

Y(ZR): 186mph/300km/h.

ZR: Above 149mph/above 240km/h.

In addition, you should also choose between summer tyres and winter tyres. Most cars in the UK come with summer tyres as standard. However, winter tyres may be employed to help your vehicle run more efficiently and reduce the chances of skidding in icy conditions.

What about tyre energy labels?

Tyre energy labels became essential in November 2012 and apply to all tyres: even if they are aftermarket sales. Each label should have three sections:

- Fuel efficiency: This refers to the tyre’s rolling resistance with lower rolling resistance creating better fuel economy for your vehicle.

- Wet grip: Sometimes tyres with low rolling resistance lose some of their grip. As such as wet grip rating has been added and is based on a standard wet braking test. Do bear in mind however, that braking distance will be affected by a number of other factors such as whether your vehicle has an anti-lock braking system.

- Noise: Considered an environmental concern, there is a label for noise which splits exterior noise from tyres into three levels. This is based on a trackside measurement.

When should you buy fleet tyres?

Remember that it is essential by law that tyres have a tread depth of at least 1.6mm: so if your tyres are below this level you will need to buy new ones immediately. However, bear in mind that tyre tread depth usually starts at 8mm and tyre grip can be badly affected by the time it reaches 2-3mm. As such, you may wish to start looking for new tyres when tread depth reaches this level.

Used or part-worn tyres are usually a cheaper option but may not be a cost effective solution in the long term. If you do opt for used or part-worn tyres then make sure you check for lumps and bulges; penetration damage; any examples of the external or internal cord being exposed; and any cuts that exceed 25mm.
