Valeting and Vehicle Preparation

Fleet Valeting and Vehicle Preparation Guide

Car valeting is often seen as a non-essential: whereas servicing and maintenance can help to keep your vehicle running efficiently and potentially lower fuel costs, there is no direct financial benefit to fleet valeting. Indeed the prospect of paying for fleet valeting and fleet vehicle preparation can be daunting.

However, while the benefits of fleet valeting may be hard to quantify, it would be difficult to deny that they are very real. Clean cars can promote your business’s image; impress clients; and establish a better working environment for your drivers. If you run a fleet of cars that relies on transporting clients – such as a chauffeur or taxi service – then the importance of fleet valets are obvious. However, even if your fleet of vehicles is involved in sales or a similar field, then clean cars can be used to boost the company’s image. Indeed valeting may even increase the residual value of your vehicles by maintaining the paintwork.

What fleet valeting services are available?

There are several types of fleet valet services available including:

- Garage valet services: Many fleet valeting services carry out their valeting on their own sites where they have access to specialist equipment which may help them get the job done quicker or more thoroughly.

- Mobile fleet valeting: Mobile fleet valeting could save your business time and money because the fleet valeting service comes to you. So, for example, you could arrange to have your vehicles cleaned while on your premises: meaning you have fewer security fears and you don’t lose time transporting your vehicles or waiting while others are attended to.

What does fleet valeting include?

There are numerous types of fleet valeting services available: ranging from mini valets to full services. It all depends on how much you want to spend and what you expect to get from the service. Typically however, a fleet valet will include the following:

- Car washing: Usually the first step of any car valet will be to clean the exterior of the car. Typically this will involve pre-spraying the entire car with clean water to remove contaminants; then washing all of the bodywork with a shampoo and wool wash mitt that will not damage the paintwork. This will then be washed off with clean water, usually with a pressure rinse; or possibly a special rinse that will leave the car looking glossy and able to repel water for a limited period.

- Wheel clean: Special attention is usually applied to the car’s wheels during a valet: usually a gentle wheel cleaner will be used to remove traces of brake dust before a pressure cleaner is applied.

- Exterior glass: The glasswork will usually be cleaned separately, perhaps with the use of a spray cleaner or a glass polish.

- Hand dry: A clean leather or microfibre towel is usually used to remove any remaining water particles from the vehicle’s surface.

- Interior cleaning: The interior cleaning will involve numerous stages including: vacuuming the carpets, mats and boot; vacuuming and brushing any fabric seats and applying moisture to leather seats; cleaning all interior glass with a spray cleaner; dusting all surfaces and cleaning out any ashtrays or bins; applying an interior auto-fresh.

In addition, some fleet valeting companies will offer additional services as part of a “full valet” or “ultimate valet” package: which is usually considerably more expensive. This may include deep cleaning all interior plastics and the dashboard; shampooing and deep cleaning the seats; degreasing the engine bay; applying a traffic film remover to the lower body and door sills; dressing and conditioning all exterior plastics; removing tar spots and tree sap; and waxing the vehicle.
